Chameleon
Creator.

Chameleon Creator is an Australian and New Zealand-built authoring tool that bundles design, hosting, and analytics in a single platform. It's positioned for L&D teams who want courses that look distinct without hiring a designer.

Type

Web-based HTML5 authoring + hosting + analytics

Output

SCORM, secure shared URLs, hosted delivery (their LMS-lite)

Pricing

From around $US1,440/year + GST. 14-day free trial.

Best for

L&D teams in mid-to-large organisations wanting branded, design-led courses without an external designer

Strengths

What it's great at.

Design-first templates

Chameleon's templates are visibly more designed than the default Rise aesthetic. Custom colours, fonts, illustrations, and 25+ interactive elements come pre-built. Courses don't look identical to every other course on the same tool — a real concern with more standardised platforms.

Built-in hosting and analytics

You can skip the LMS entirely. Publish to Chameleon's hosting, share secure URLs, and get engagement analytics out of the box. Useful when training extends to contractors, suppliers, or external audiences who don't have a company email.

Responsive output

Fully responsive HTML5. Phones, tablets, desktop — all handled without manual tuning. Comparable to Rise in this respect, and a clear win over Storyline.

WCAG 2.0 accessibility baseline

Content can be built to WCAG 2.0 standards with the tool's guidance. Accessibility hints are surfaced as you build, rather than retroactively audited — which catches issues earlier than most tools.

Local support

Support team in Australia and New Zealand, dedicated account managers, sub-24-hour response times. For organisations in those time zones, this is meaningfully better than the US-based support most authoring tools offer.

Weaknesses

Where it struggles.

No built-in audio or voiceover

You can't generate or record audio inside Chameleon. Voiceover has to be produced externally — recorded, AI-generated, or commissioned — then uploaded. A persistent point of friction in user reviews, and unusual for a platform at this price point in 2026.

Smaller ecosystem

Fewer templates, fewer community resources, fewer training videos than the Articulate ecosystem. If you hit an unusual problem, the answer probably isn't on a forum somewhere — you'll be asking the support team directly.

No complex branching or state tracking

Branching is supported, but not at the depth of Storyline. There's no variable system to track cumulative learner state, and complex scenarios with multi-decision consequences will hit the tool's ceiling.

Tied to Chameleon's hosting model

The "skip SCORM" advantage is also a lock-in risk. Courses hosted in Chameleon's platform are easy to deliver, but moving them out later — to a corporate LMS, to another vendor — requires re-authoring. SCORM export still works, but the hosted features don't carry across.

Less mature than Articulate

The product is younger than Articulate's tools and still maturing. Some users report a clunky interface in places, occasional limitations in template flexibility, and gaps in features that mature tools handle without comment.

Decision

When Chameleon is the right call.

Pick Chameleon when

  • You're an internal L&D team in mid-to-large ANZ organisations.
  • Brand distinctiveness matters — your courses can't look like everyone else's.
  • You want hosting and analytics without buying a separate LMS.
  • You're delivering to external audiences (contractors, suppliers, customers) who don't have access to your LMS.
  • Local support and Australian working hours are valuable.

Pick something else when

  • You need deep branching, simulations, or variable-driven logic — use Storyline.
  • You need voiceover or audio generation inside the tool — Chameleon doesn't have it; Mindsmith or Articulate 360 do.
  • The course volume is small (one a year) — the subscription is hard to justify at that scale.
  • The ecosystem and community size matters — Articulate has decades of head start.
  • You need real-time multi-author collaboration with element-level comments — Parta is built for that.
When we'd reach for Chameleon

In practice.

01

Brand-led onboarding programs

Organisations with strong brand standards that want their training to visibly belong to them, not look like a generic Rise course.

02

External-facing learning

Training for contractors, channel partners, or customers who don't sit inside the corporate LMS. Chameleon's hosted delivery solves the access problem cleanly.

03

L&D teams without dedicated designers

Where the L&D team is small or shared with HR, the design-led templates lift the visual quality of courses above what the same team would produce in a more open tool.

04

Compliance with analytics

Compliance training where the analytics matter — completion rates, engagement, drop-off points — and the team doesn't want to wrestle with SCORM and LMS reporting.
